Although not technically located in East Manchester (yet!), FC United, short for Football Club United of Manchester, has an important historic association with the area.
Affectionately known as ‘The Red Rebels’, this semi-professional football club, was formed in 2005 by disaffected Manchester United supporters following Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover of the club.
Currently playing their matches at a football ground in Bury, FC United now have planning permission to build their new £3.5m stadium in Newton Heath, the original birthplace of Manchester United.
They hope to have moved in to their new base by 2013 but the timescale depends on the length of the building process. The proposal is to build a new stadium, with a capacity of 5,000 on the site of an existing sport centre and artificial football pitches, plus additional community facilities on the site.
