New homes close to the city aren’t just for singles – they’re for families too. That’s the vision behind the ambitious new plans for Holt Town.
Holt Town Waterfront is situated between New Islington and the wealth of leisure and sporting facilities at Eastlands. This traditional industrial area is set to be transformed into a new family-focussed community in coming years, planned around a newly-landscaped river valley and the new Holt Town Metrolink stop, due to open in 2012.
The development will provide low-rise family housing close to the city centre, a concept unheard of in the UK until now. Taking its lead from developments in Stockholm, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark, the intention is that the Holt Town scheme will create more than 4,000 new homes surrounded by parks, playgrounds, leisure facilities, shops, offices and a new primary school.
The plans are extensive and long-term – it is anticipated that the development of Holt Town will take approximately 10-15 years in total – but the city is determined that the potential of this prime location close to the city centre will be fulfilled.
