Chips is the first residential building in the UK that architect Will Alsop has completed and, as you can see from the look of it, is far from being just another apartment block.
Standing nine storeys high and looking down over New Islington’s new marina development, Chips does indeed look like three fat chips stacked on top of each other. Each 'chip' is clad with coloured timber panels stamped with the names of places which pay homage to Manchester’s role in history as the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
Inside, flexible living spaces allow you to choose an apartment that suits your particular needs, with every apartment having some outside space, with either use of the communal roof terrace or in some cases a private balcony and many have a waterside view. In fact standing on the top of Chips looking towards Ancoats is the ideal place to see all the elements of the New Islington jigsaw coming together: the tram, the canals, the new park, the health centre, and all against the city centre backdrop.
