Public invited to learn about latest regeneration proposals for transformation of Eastlands
Residents, businesses and landowners who live or work in East Manchester are being invited to learn about plans for the next phase of regeneration in the area.
Proposals are being brought forward to transform up to 80 hectares of land around the Eastlands site, which is home to the City of Manchester Stadium, bordering Alan Turing Way, Ashton New Road, Clayton Lane and Wilson Street.
The plans follow the signing of the Eastlands Development Partnership, a joint venture between New East Manchester Ltd (NEM), Manchester City Council (MCC) and Manchester City Football Club (MCFC), who will together take forward the redevelopment of the area.
The plans set out the future vision for Eastlands, proposing that the area expands its role as a national and international destination for world-class sport and leisure facilities, increasing community access and creating jobs for local people.
Those who live or work in and around the Eastlands site are being encouraged to attend one of six public consultation events being held at community venues across Beswick, Ancoats, Clayton and Openshaw until 8 June.
Staff from NEM will be on hand to talk through the proposals and answer any questions that residents or businesses may have. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to comment on the plans.
Once the public consultation has concluded, a strategic plan called the Eastlands Regeneration Framework will be finalised, setting out the vision for the area and supplementing the current East Manchester Manchester Strategic Regeneration Framework, which was published in 2008.
The document will be used by NEM as a guide for the regeneration of Eastlands, as well as helping MCC to assess planning applications for any future developments in the vicinity.
Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester said: “The proposals for the transformation of Eastlands will shape our regeneration priorities and actions over the coming years, building on the successes already achieved in East Manchester over the last 15 years. We want local residents, businesses and visitors to benefit from all future investment opportunities in the area, so we are keen to hear from all those who live and work in this part of the city.”
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "This framework along with the partnership will drive progress over the next decade and will not just secure the economic success of the area, but also be a truly groundbreaking relationship setting the benchmark in the world of regeneration. Our joint partnership is progressive and maturing and our mutual commitment means that our shared vision for the area can become a reality that will create jobs, visitors and opportunities for residents of East Manchester.
Garry Cook, CEO of Manchester City FC added: “Manchester City is a Club at the heart of the city and at the heart of its community. It is therefore wholly appropriate to strengthen our links with the City Council, whilst at the same time reaching out to those in the community around us and establishing ways in which we can best serve them."
